San Francisco Design Week: The Connectivity of Craft

Works In Progress, an exhibition series with a mission to amplify, archive, and create dialogue around the Bay Area craft and design community, hosted a panel at our sister company Space Theory’s showroom in Mill Valley during San Francisco Design Week. The discussion, titled “The Connectivity of Craft,” featured four individuals working across art, design, education, and community-building, including pattern-maker Evan Kinori, illustrator Katherine Lam, artist, designer, and maker Yvonne Mouser, and artist David Wilson. Moderator Kelley Perumbeti asked, How do the things we make actually shape the fabric of our home? How does the production of craft—whether in the form of a sculpture, garment, or a gathering—influence our environment and sense of community? What does it take to build creative ecosystems, and what conditions allow those ecosystems to blossom?

Archetypes at Home: Making Objects That Influence and Endure

Tiffany Jow, editor-in-chief of our design journal, Untapped, led a conversation with Andrea Trimarchi and Simone Farresin, founders of the Milan-based studio Formafantasma, on the occasion of “Formation,” their first gallery exhibition in the United States. The evening began with a walk-through led by the designers at the gallery, Friedman Benda, followed by the talk, which focused on the relationship between furniture, the home, and the concept of the archetype in design.

Stable Building Opening Party

Henrybuilt and its sister company Space Theory welcomed homeowners, friends, and partners to a cocktail party celebrating the opening of Space Theory’s New York flagship showroom, located on the ground floor of the historic Stable Building in Dumbo, Brooklyn. Henrybuilt opens upstairs in the fall of 2025, after a long stint at its beloved SoHo showroom on Crosby Street. Both brands make the move as Dumbo rises as a prominent design district of New York City.

Renovating Your Eichler: An Evening with Klopf Architecture

Henrybuilt and its sister company Space Theory hosted a Q&A about Joseph Eichler home renovations with Klopf Architecture and realtor Logan Link at Space Theory’s new Mill Valley showroom. Joseph Eichler was a California-based developer known for his distinctive, mid-century modern housing, which is prevalent throughout the Bay Area. Klopf Architecture, an Eichler expert, helped guide attendees through how to restore and renovate the buildings with respect to their history: a feat that Henrybuilt and Space Theory have undertaken on numerous projects.

Casa Cork Salon Series

April 7 and 9, 2025

Casa Cork, Milan

Casa Cork, a living laboratory that explores cork’s overlooked potential for material innovation, craft, and a circular economy, debuted at Milan Design Week. Created by David Rockwell and the nonprofit Cork Collective, the installation featured various activations throughout the week to bring its ideas to life. This included the Casa Cork Salon Series—curated and led by Untapped, the design journal published by Henrybuilt—which explored topics specific and adjacent to cork so as to demonstrate its wide-ranging significance. Speakers included architects David Rockwell and Suchi Reddy, designers Tom Dixon and Yves Behar, and curator and writer Deyan Sudjic, who spoke with Untapped’s editor-in-chief, Tiffany Jow.

Space Theory Bay Area Opening Party

Space Theory, Henrybuilt’s sister company focused on bringing a simplified, more affordable version of its system kitchen approach to a wider audience, celebrated the opening of its Bay Area showroom with a housewarming party on March 27. The space is located in Mill Valley, California, next door to Henrybuilt, in a 4,000-square-foot former warehouse space. Bay Area friends were welcomed to explore new products, enjoy sips from Sonoma winemaker Marine Layer, and connect with the local design community.

A Love Letter to L.A.

Henrybuilt Los Angeles organized a group photography show and wildfire relief fundraiser to support communities affected by recent Los Angeles wildfires. The exhibition brought together personal and unique perspectives from architecture and design photographers, offering a view of Los Angeles’s beauty and resilience through their work. All proceeds from the event went to the LAFD Foundation and CCF Wildfire Recovery Fund.

Same Blue as the Sky

Et al., San Francisco

Henrybuilt sponsored the second edition of Same Blue as the Sky, a biennial exhibition held at Et al., a contemporary art gallery in San Francisco. Co-curated by Studio Ahead and Mariah Nielson, the show celebrated Northern California’s singular cultural heritage and the artists who inspire their studios. For this iteration, the initiative recognized the historic freedom and independence that artists have found in Northern California, but turned toward the shared experience of its densely populated and expressively-built cities.

New York Architecture + Design Book Club: Archigram 10

Head Hi, Brooklyn

The eighth New York Architecture + Design Book Club, co-organized by the Brooklyn bookstore Head Hi and Untapped, the independent design journal published by Henrybuilt, focused on “Archigram 10” (Circa Books). The latest publication from the British architecture collective Archigram—out 50 years after its last issue—the magazine makes clear how relevant, urgent, and vital the group’s zany approach to architecture remains. The program featured architects and book contributors Barry Wark and Winka Dubbeldam, who spoke with architect Michael Young about all things Archigram.

Wendy Maruyama and Tom Loeser

American Studio Craft trailblazers Wendy Maruyama and Tom Loeser shared their stories, joy, and wisdom in a talk led by Tiffany Jow, editor-in-chief of Untapped, the design journal published by Henrybuilt. The artists were in town to celebrate the launch of “Colorama,” a new exhibition at Superhouse that was on view through January 11. The conversation expanded on a story about Maruyama and Loeser’s views on the role of handcrafted objects in an increasingly digital world, featured in Untapped’s Print Edition 002.

Print Edition 002 Launch Party

A83, New York

Print Edition 002 of Untapped, the independent design journal published by Henrybuilt, made a grand entrance—on newsstands, online, and at the New York gallery and print studio A83, which is featured in the publication. Hundreds of guests took in A83’s current exhibition, “Architectural Drawing III,” and a spellbinding site-specific performance by Roderick George, Nicholas Ryan Gant, and Nouhoum Koita.

Please Touch: An Exhibition of Beautiful and Useful Objects, Presented by Fine Objects Society

Henrybuilt New York hosted the launch of Fine Objects Society, a community focused on the future of the decorative arts, and the opening of the group’s first exhibition, “Please Touch,” which presented exceptional historical objects for visitors to touch, pick up, and turn over.

The standing room only gathering featured the title’s author (and Columbus native) Matt Shaw and graphic designer Alex Lin, who spoke with landscape designer Sara Zewde about the process of putting it together.

On Location: Ideas Shaping Bay Area Design

Untapped, the independent design journal published by Henrybuilt, led a lively discussion about the key ideas shaping Bay Area design at San Francisco’s Center for Architecture + Design. The insights and experiences shared by furniture designer Kate Greenberg, interior and furniture designer Michael Hilal, architect Rudabeh Pakravan of Sidell Pakravan, and Homan Rajai of Studio Ahead sparked countless conversations at the reception that followed, signaling a growing, palpable energy that we look forward to seeing again soon.

Henrybuilt’s sister company Space Theory hosted a talk at its SoHo showroom during NYCxDesign about system-based approaches to design. Long present throughout Europe, this type of timeless, solution-oriented design systems have evolved into a backbone of the industry. Moderator Pei-Ru Keh wondered, “Now, can a number of pioneering American design studios seed a generation of systems-thinking?” Panelists included David Charne, co-founder of Fyrn; Joshua Itiola, designer and furniture design consultant at Vitsoe; and Virginie Remy, creative director of Space Theory.

In Tension: The Function of Body and Space

National Academy of Design, New York

Hundreds turned out at the National Academy of Design to hear artists Torkwase Dyson and Sarah Oppenheimer talk about memory, time, boundaries, and more during “In Tension: The Function of Body and Space,” a conversation led by Untapped, the independent design journal published by Henrybuilt. The discussion marked the one-year anniversary of Untapped and the first in a series of public programs for “Sites of Impermanence” (through May 11), the Academy’s current exhibition of work by its 2023 Class of National Academicians: Dyson and Oppenheimer, as well as Alica Adams, Sanford Biggers, Willie Cole, Richard Gluckman, Carlos Jiménez, and Mel Kendrick.

Print Edition 001 Launch Party

Untapped, the independent design journal published by Henrybuilt, launched its inaugural print edition at the Los Angeles gallery Marta. Guests took in a singular performance by thereminist Armen Ra, and Wentrcek / Zebulon’s exhibition “No Life,” which was on view through November 11.
